About Kia Johnson

The unsung hero of the media and entertainment industry

The rise and rise of media mogul and mom, Kia Johnson

Quirky, ambitious, vivacious, driven and ready for any challenge that comes her way. She’s your traffic-eye in the sky on Radio 2000, Metro FM and SAfm, and has you streaming on weekdays, as she explores real-life women’s issues on the brand-new talk show All Woman TV. These are amongst the many qualities that epitomise the quintessential MC, radio and TV personality Kia Johnson.

With the year in full swing, Johnson is showcasing more of her personality on all broadcasting platforms and bringing light to the brilliance that is women embracing technology. She has partnered with a dynamic team of women to launch the new women’s YouTube talk show All Woman TV, which is currently on its second episode. Johnson is joined on the show by TV and radio personality Fiona Furey, author and writer Chwayita Ngamlana, and arts therapist Dr Makgathi Mokwena. The show aims to create a transparent space that allows the panel to engage in an open dialogue regarding women’s issues with a select guest each episode.

Viewers can catch Johnson wax lyrical on all things feminine with the All Woman TV crew on YouTube and indulge themselves in the real, sublime and often hilarious discussions the panel engages in.

After graduating from the University of Western Cape with a BCom in Human Resources Management, Johnson began her radio and broadcasting career that has gone on to span over 15 years and counting. Since her broadcasting debut, she has interviewed and met a range of local and international personalities, such as Chef Gordan Ramsay, Pastry Chef extraordinaire Eric Lanlard and English actor and comedian John Cleese, to name but a few.

“Growing up, I was your typical introverted class nerd who always read a book and was enthralled by the creative world of words.” A couple of years later though, Johnson does admit that she grew to become the extrovert that she is today, which naturally drew her into a career in media and entertainment.

A familiar face to TV, Johnson presented and produced for the Expresso Morning Show on SABC3, then went on to launch her own TV show, Life of KJ, which aired on Openview HD, Star Sat and Deen TV. The show, which was a huge success, excelled in its aim to empower viewers through the profiling of individuals in the community who have turned their unfavourable conditions into stories of hope.

In 2011, Johnson was actively involved in the campaign that lead to Table Mountain being inaugurated as one of the seven wonders of nature. Johnson utilised her TV, radio and social

networking platforms to increase the awareness of the campaign, and she single-handedly educated and showcased the campaign to schools across the country.

In addition to her broadcasting prowess, Johnson gives her time to charitable causes. She is the Goodwill Ambassador for the NGO, she also extends her time to her chosen CSI, Tygerberg Children’s Hospital (TCH), and previously, she contributed to raising funds for the Children Who Can 4 Children Who Can’t campaign. Being a mother herself, she has also focused on the Kangaroo Mother Care Unit at TCH and has raised funds for the Neo-Natal ward.

In 2017, Johnson was a key contributor and maintained second place in the world for the HeardPSA initiative, which was coordinated in partnership with CNN and the Global Sustainability Network. The prestigious judging panel included the likes of Wesley Snipes, Joseph Fiennes, Olivier Martinez and feature film director Philip Boston.  “Our focus for the initiative was on human trafficking for My Freedom Day. Since then, I have felt more drawn to a greater purpose, so I have decided that 2018 is the year for me to focus on creating awareness around this very serious issue and how we, as citizens of this world, can change it.”

Known for her healthy living, Johnson is a Muaythai ambassador for the two-time Muaythai World Champion Quentin Chong’s Dragon Power Muaythai, MMA and Fitness Centre.

About Lady Amar

Thando also known as Lady Amar was born is the township of Soweto Johannesburg in Gauteng.  Although she was born in Soweto, Thando was raised in Orange farm by a single mother and grandmother. She is a very well disciplined child who was taught to be strong from a very young age.  “My mother is a strong woman who taught me that going through tough times is a lesson to keep me going.” Thando grew up in a very underprivileged background but that did not stop her from going after what she wants.

This very inspiring young woman is a recording artist and a commercial house dj and started singing at a very young age. She grew up wanting to pursue a career in teaching but we all know that as you grow you get to know yourself better and then decided to follow her destiny which is anything to do with music. She believes that singing and her love for music is her God given talents and believes that what she is doing now is what she was destined to do.

Like most of us, Thando has had a lot of downfalls. In the year 2012, Thando got her first job where she worked as a waitress at The Bread Basket. She was later promoted to supervisor but unfortunately got retrenched after two years. Thando did not let that stop her though and she then found a new job at a company called BEE STRATA, where she worked as a verification analyst and this was in 2015. In that same year, Thando decided to resign and put all her focus on her music career and that is when everything started coming together.

The following year, Thando decided to audition for South African Idols and unfortunately did not make it. All of this did not stop her as she believed that she was and still is destined for greatness.

She has since studied at FUSE Academy and has been playing at Johannesburg’s hottest clubs and parties. Thando worked on a song titled Ekseni with two upcoming artists from Orange Farm and the song has been doing very well on the streets.

Thando is very well known as an events DJ/vocalist who goes by the name of DJ Lady Amar as has made a name for herself Djying alongside some of the best DJ’s in the industry and bringing life to some of the best parties.

About Buhle Moletsane

Buhle Moletsane burst onto the scene after winning former Top Billing presenter Jo-ann Strauss’ very first online presenter search in 2011. She was seasoned & mentored by Ms Strauss & her partners including the bold & brilliant Bonang Matheba & formidable businesswoman Carol Bouwer, who appeared on the cover of Destiny Mag with Miss Moletsane & has continued guiding her to this day.

In 2012 after inspiring Jo-ann’s Glambition, Buhle appeared as a guest presenter on the show which opened numerous doors for her. She became the on-site correspondent for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week that year – interviewing the likes of Jen Su, Nkhensane Nkosi, Ursula Stephens who styles Rihanna & fashion week stakeholders who later praised Buhle for her attractive personality & professionalism.

Miss Moletsane also became the PONDS Spokesperson for Unilever & part of her role was to travel across the country to 124 high schools, educating young women on grooming, hygiene & self-love. Meeting disadvantaged youth touched Buhle so much that she continued communicating with them beyond her PONDS duties. She began by donating matric dance dresses, essentials & toiletries to the young women, then furthered her engagement through a book club which she founded because it’s through information & education that these young ladies can overcome their unfortunate circumstances….

Realising her love for human connection & communication, Buhle ventured into radio in 2014, hosting & producing content on The Lunch Box, a midday show at UNISA FM. She went to TransAfrica Radio a year later to reach a bigger audience & hone her skill. 2014 was good to Buhle as it presented acting opportunities too for the young talent. She began her acting career on Generations by playing Ntombenhle, then she joined the Majakathata family on SABC 2 playing Kimmy a young wife to a stupidly rich businessman. She played Lerato in a Don’t Look Down film titled Dancing Divas before auditioning for the role of Zinzi on ETV’s Rhythm City. Though she didn’t get that role, her ability to hold an audience captive saw the production creating a whole new character specifically for her. Buhle became Refilwe in 2015 (which she still plays) & in 2016 her biggest role came in the form of Gabisile on Mzansi Magic’s Greed & Desire. The character was initially meant to appear for a few episodes but Buhle has an amazing knack for keeping audiences yearning for more, so her character was developed further & Buhle played Gabi until the Season’s end. At the moment Buhle is Phumla on ETV’s Harvest, she’s launched her soul-DJ career & is coming out with her own brand of hair soon.

  14. What are the top 10 tips you would give to a female DJ starting out?
    1. Only DJ for the love of it, not because its a trendy hobby. DJing requires patience, good ears and knowledge of your market. It takes hard work to grow your followers and brand which can at times become frustrating.
    2. It’s easy to get sucked into the ‘lifestyle’ but always remember why you became a DJ.
    3. Make sure you do your ground work and beware of people taking advantage. Stick to your guns and ignore naysayers.
    4. Don’t be afraid to say no to “dodgy” promoters. You’ll be pulled in all directions if you don’t stand your ground from the start.
    5. Remember that, at the end of the day, this is business.
    6. All DJs get nervous. If you don’t, you’re doing it wrong. The trick is to be professional enough to hide your nerves.
    7. On that note, always look and act the part you want to play.
    8. Have a vision for where you want to be.
    9. It’s in our nature to downplay our own efforts and elevate those of others, but remember that you are not a polished, finished article.
    10. Most importantly, just go for it! You have nothing to lose.
