South Africa’s summer music scene 2018

It has been a phenomenal year for local music and as the year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the last 11 months, the experiences and influences it made on us. Mzansi music (across all genres) has proven to be ground-breaking, earning its’ place on the global map musically.

The December period is a highlight in every South African’s calendar and with that comes unforgettable soundtracks to summer. In summer the mass exodus tales place as people make their way to the coast to enjoy their well deserved breaks, and with that comes new beats and anthems that accompany them in this holiday period.

This can beg the question, what will my summer ‘18 sound like?

National treasure, DJ Black Coffee is one of the highlights of the Cape Town summer experience. He famously hosts a house and dance celebration at Shimmy Beach club that is considered one the most popular events to see and be seen at. This New Years eve, Cape Town will also play host to Mi Casa at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Newlands, where the upbeat afro tunes of the trio will keep guests on their feet from day to night. The Strawberry Lips Sweet Beats event will also play host to top female DJ’s Kimmy K, Kia Johnson and Abby Nurock, adding to the upbeat party style music synonymous with the summer experience.

Moving further down the coast Durban will also play host to the Babes Wodumo Gqom Nation Festival and the I Love Market Festival. All of these will become the platforms of the sounds of summer 2018. Whether it’s house, hip hop, gqom or EDM- summer has an unmistakable sound that carries us into the new year. We look forward to a celebration of summer all through the diverse genres of music available in Mzansi.
